Abstract

Karl Blossfeldt, born in 1865 in Schielo in the Harz region of the Kingdom of Prussia, was a design educator and photographer who enlarged plant buds, stems, seed heads, and inflorescences against plain backgrounds. Photographs accumulated since the 1890s as teaching aids for applied-art education were reappraised in the contexts of New Objectivity and New Vision after Urformen der Kunst (1928) and the Film und Foto exhibition (1929).
